Location: Westbury / Nassau County, NY
Leadership Training Institute (LTI) is seeking a highly motivated and passionate part-time Special Education Teacher to work with youth in a secure juvenile detention setting. The ideal candidate will deliver individualized academic instruction and support to students in grades 6–12, many of whom face unique educational and behavioral challenges.
This role requires a committed educator who can adapt to diverse learning needs, maintain a trauma-informed approach, and contribute meaningfully to a multidisciplinary team. Experience in administration is a plus and retired teachers are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address the unique academic and behavioral needs of each student.
- Modify and adapt curriculum materials across multiple subject areas to ensure accessibility for students with varied learning styles and abilities.
- Create a supportive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment, emphasizing positive behavior support and social-emotional development.
- Employ diverse instructional strategies and assistive technologies to ensure all students can meaningfully engage with the educational program.
- Track and maintain accurate records on student progress, IEP compliance, assessments, and all required documentation.
- Maintain open communication with families, the juvenile detention center, and other educational or service providers as appropriate.
- Participate in professional development and ongoing training in evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and strategies for justice-involved youth.
- Collaborate effectively with LTI staff and detention center personnel, and assist with administrative tasks related to program coordination when needed.
Qualifications
- Valid New York State Special Education Certification
- Demonstrated experience working with youth in detention, alternative schools, or other at-risk populations
- Strong understanding of special education laws and IEP development
- Ability to teach across multiple subject areas and grade levels (6–12)
- Skilled in using educational technology and assistive devices
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized, flexible, and capable of managing multiple priorities
- Administrative experience a plus
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus

Position: Part-Time
Work Schedule: 3 days per week (Morning or Afternoon Shifts)
Morning: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Afternoon: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Hourly Rate: $40
